Java: Java Sunda Kawah Kamojang

$16.00

This is our first coffee from Java and we couldn't be more excited. This coffee is from a few small coffee communities located southeast of Bandung, West Java. The farmers here are wet-processing the coffee in small batches to high standards. Java Sunda (West Java) was the original coffee area, though the majority of coffee exported is now grown in East Java, where all the big estates are. Historically, Javanese coffee sold in the US is basically marketed as "East Java" coffee, regardless of where it's from. The farmers in Java Sunda always kept small coffee plots, and there was a commodity quality mill near Bandung that would buy coffee (but not for much), and blend it away with the Eastern estates. But it is here in West Java, among the Ateng and Jember, that you still see some old Typica trees, the original Typica! (Java was the first destination for coffee from Yemen, with a stopover in India). In the past decade, you've seen a resurgence of interest in the coffees from Java Sunda, which has led to more mills popping up in the region, and wider availability of site-specific coffees from the various coffee-growing villages. This lot is made up of coffees from smallholders in the Garut area, on the slopes of Gunung Kamojang (often referred to as "Kawah Kamojang", "Kawah" meaning "crater" in Bahasa), and Gunung Mandalawangi. The coffee is planted from 1400-1550 meters above sea level. All these coffees are hand-sorted, hiring locals in the area. This is another beautiful Farm Gate coffee and an excellent choice for espresso.
